Moving to Inclusion: The Ultimate Hub for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in UK Sport

Creating a sports environment where everyone feels welcome, valued, and safe requires more than good intentions, it demands clear structure, self-reflection, and continuous action.

Whether you manage a local grassroots club, a national governing body (NGB), or an active community group, embedding Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) can feel complex. That is where the Moving to Inclusion Hub comes in.

Developed collaboratively by the five UK Sports Councils, Moving to Inclusion is the UK’s primary digital resource and framework designed to guide sports and physical activity organisations toward meaningful, long-term inclusive change.

What is the Moving to Inclusion Hub?

The Moving to Inclusion Hub is an online development platform and self-reflection framework created by the Sports Councils Equality Group (SCEG)—which represents Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Wales, Sport Northern Ireland, and UK Sport.

Replacing the previous Equality Standard – A Framework for Sport, Moving to Inclusion shifts the sector away from rigid box-ticking accreditations and toward a continuous improvement model. It recognises that every organisation is at a different point in its EDI journey and provides flexible, adaptable tools to build a bespoke action plan.

Core Objective: To drive cultural and systemic change in sport and physical activity, tackling inequalities to create sustainable improvements in participation, workforce diversity, leadership, and participant experience.

The 5 Pillars of the Moving to Inclusion Framework

  1. Leadership
Demonstrating top-down commitment to EDI through clear governance, diverse decision-making boards, transparent policies, and executive accountability.
  2. Culture
Shaping shared organisational values, norms, and behaviours to foster a welcoming environment where everyone feels respected and safe.
  3. Experience
Improving real-world outcomes for underrepresented groups across grassroots clubs, elite pathways, volunteering, and coaching.
  4. Relationships
Building collaborative cross-sector partnerships, community networks, and supportive alliances to tackle deep-rooted inequalities together.
  5. Communication
Consistently articulating EDI commitments, policies, and successes through inclusive imagery, accessible language, and authentic marketing.

Key Features & Tools on the Hub

The Moving to Inclusion platform provides practical, downloadable resources and self-assessment tools to help organisations move from policy to practice:

  • The Interactive Self-Diagnostic Tool: Organisations can evaluate their current practices across each of the 5 pillars. By scoring indicators on a 1–5 scale, the tool highlights organizational strengths and pinpoints priority areas needing improvement.
  • Tailored Action & Improvement Planning: Once self-reflection is complete, the hub automatically offers targeted suggestions for improvement. These insights help your working group craft a realistic, ambitious EDI Improvement Plan that aligns with your specific budget and resources.
  • Policy Templates & Guidance: All sports bodies require a robust EDI policy. Moving to Inclusion provides step-by-step guidance on drafting zero-tolerance policies against bullying, harassment, and discrimination, ensuring dignity and respect across the workforce.

Why Is This Framework Essential for Modern Sports Leaders?

Adopting an active EDI framework goes beyond regulatory compliance; it makes sports organisations more resilient, attractive, and impactful.

  • Increased Participation: Removing cultural and physical barriers opens your sport to broader demographic groups.
  • Higher Retention & Satisfaction: Inclusive cultures boost staff, volunteer, and player satisfaction, lowering churn rates.
  • Funding & Sponsorship Readiness: Major funders (including Sport England, UK Sport, and national bodies) prioritize organisations that demonstrate active EDI progress.
  • Enhanced Reputation: Transparent communication builds public trust and positions your organisation as a community leader.
